Forget those dry, sad "nachos" you've eaten at bars outside of Mexico. We've all been there: eagerly ordering a plate of nachos and receiving a mountain of mass-produced chips smothered in questionable cheese sauce. If you've felt that disappointment, it's because you know that real Mexican nachos are legendary . They're crispy, they're hot, they're creamy, they're hearty, and above all, they're a festival of authentic flavor that evokes the atmosphere of a Mexico City market or a neighborhood taqueria . Today, the wait is over: we bring you the best recipe for preparing authentic Mexican nachos, so you can recreate that warmth in your own home.
The secret to authentic Mexican nachos isn't in the technique, but in the quality of the ingredients . You can't recreate the taste of Mexico with generic supermarket products.
For this recipe you will need:
2 Herdez green salsa or 1 can of San Miguel jalapeño salsa. Now, if you want to impress your guests, make it yourself by blending 1 can of Carey whole tomatillos with half an onion, a handful of cilantro, a clove of garlic, salt, pepper, and a little fresh green chile in a blender. If you want a really spicy salsa, Pepe Comala tomatillos are very tasty, but they're for true chili warriors, as they're quite hot.
1 can of La Sierra beans, either refried black or refried pinto beans . Either one works perfectly.
Optional: You can add shredded chicken, beef, or pork.
You'll also need a thick, sour cream. French brands usually work very well.
200g of melting cheese.
La Costeña serrano peppers or Herdez pico de gallo salsa for garnish.
Homemade guacamole.
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). While it's heating, place the tortilla chips in a baking dish and spread them evenly. Add the La Sierra beans on top and then drizzle with plenty of your choice of green salsa. Don't be afraid to add a little extra salsa; the chips need to be well-soaked to achieve the desired consistency. Otherwise, they'll be dry. If you're adding any meat, now's the time to do so.
Distribute all the ingredients evenly.
Add the cheese on top of everything, until it covers the other ingredients, and bake for 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven. When you see that the cheese is melted, it's time to take the dish out of the oven.
Once it's out of the oven, add the sour cream, pico de gallo, and/or serrano peppers as a garnish. If you made guacamole, you can also put a generous portion on top of the nachos.
Finally, you can add a little green salsa to further moisten your delicious nachos.
